nzphotos.com licenses photographs of New Zealand. Only New Zealand — there is no filler here from anywhere else, and no second collection waiting behind the first.

Every image is a photograph: a real place, at a real moment, taken with a camera. Nothing on this site is generated from a text prompt. That used to go without saying, and no longer does.

The collection

Most stock libraries answer a search with forty near-identical frames of the same subject and leave the choosing to you. We do the choosing first. One considered frame of a place is worth more than a page of variations on it, and it is a great deal faster to work with.

Each photograph carries the region of New Zealand it was taken in, so you can look by place rather than by keyword, and comes in the sizes and styles that are actually useful — colour, black and white, and the other treatments listed on each image.

Where a photograph has been accepted or awarded in an international salon under the patronage of the Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique, that is shown on the image itself. Those entries are drawn live from the salon record, not typed in by hand.

The photographer

The collection has one author. Every photograph on this site was taken by Harald Hochmann, who moved from Vienna to Auckland in 2018 and has photographed New Zealand ever since. That is why the collection holds together: one way of seeing, applied consistently, rather than the pooled output of thousands of contributors who have never met.

Coming from somewhere else turns out to be useful. What a country stops noticing about itself — the light on a particular coast, the shape of a street corner, how the weather arrives — is the first thing a newcomer reaches for the camera about.

He works in the landscape, on the coast and in the cities of New Zealand, and competes internationally in salons patronised by the Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique.

What you are buying

A licence, evidenced by a document. Every image you license comes with a Licence Certificate naming the photograph, the licence type, the licence holder and the date — a certificate, not a line on a receipt. It is generated once, at the time of purchase, and never changes afterwards.

The terms behind it are published in full, carry a version number and a date, and are frozen: the version in force when you paid is the version that governs your licence, and it stays available to you even after a later one appears. There are three levels — Standard, Extended and Enterprise — and what each one permits is set out plainly in the Licence Terms.

One restriction is worth naming here rather than leaving in the small print: the photographs may not be used to train artificial intelligence or machine learning models, and may not be included in datasets compiled for that purpose. They were made by a person, and they stay that way.

The company

nzphotos.com is operated by DAY Investments Limited, a company registered in New Zealand with its registered office in Auckland, registered for GST here. Prices are shown in New Zealand Dollars, and invoices are issued with the correct tax treatment for where you are — including the reverse charge for business customers in the European Union.
